Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tucker was once a small town located in the southwestern part of Ripley County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Today, it is known as an "extinct town" or a ghost town, meaning it no longer has people living there or active buildings.

The GNIS (Geographic Names Information System), which is a database of place names in the United States, still lists Tucker as a place where people once lived.

Where Was Tucker Located?

Tucker was situated along Missouri Route Z. This road runs south of a community called Gatewood. The town was also about three miles north of the border between Missouri and Arkansas.

A Brief History of Tucker

The community of Tucker had a short but interesting history. It was named after a local person named John Tucker, who was a merchant in the area. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods. Sometimes, people also referred to the town as "Tuckertown."

One important sign of a growing community is a post office. Tucker had its own post office, which opened in 1891. This allowed residents to send and receive mail. However, the post office did not stay open for very long. It closed its operations in 1907. After the post office closed, the town likely started to decline, eventually becoming an extinct town.
