Tulio Halperin Donghi (born October 27, 1926 – died November 14, 2014) was an important historian from Argentina. He was known for his work on Latin American history. He taught at many universities around the world, including the University of Buenos Aires, Oxford University, and the University of California, Berkeley.
A Life Dedicated to History
Tulio Halperin Donghi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1926. He studied at the University of Buenos Aires. In 1955, he earned two important degrees: a law degree (called a juris doctor) and a PhD in history.
He became a very well-known historian, especially for his studies on Latin America. From 1955 to 1966, he taught at the University of Buenos Aires. Later, he moved to the National University of the Litoral and became a dean there.
In 1966, due to political changes in Argentina, he left the country for a time. This event was known as the Night of the Long Batons. He then taught at Oxford University in England. In 1972, he joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in the United States. He often divided his time between the University of California and the University of Buenos Aires.
Tulio Halperin Donghi wrote many books about history. In 1998, he received a special award for his excellent historical work from the American Historical Association. He passed away on November 14, 2014.
