Tullio Ilomets (born July 13, 1921 – died August 22, 2018) was a famous Estonian scientist. He was a chemist, which means he studied chemicals and how they work. He also loved history, especially the history of science. Plus, he helped protect old buildings and important historical items.

Tullio Ilomets's School Days

Tullio Ilomets was born in a town called Paide. He finished high school there in 1941. After that, he went to college to study chemistry. He studied at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute from 1946 to 1948. Then, he continued his studies at Tartu State University from 1948 to 1952.

After finishing his studies, Tullio Ilomets started working at the University of Tartu. He joined the chemistry department in 1952. He worked there as a researcher and teacher for many years. In 1965, he earned a special degree in chemistry and became an associate professor. This means he was a senior teacher and researcher. He became an associate professor emeritus in 2007, which is an honorary title for retired professors.

Protecting History and Science

Tullio Ilomets was very passionate about history. He was one of the people who helped start the Academic Heritage Society. He was also an honorary member of the Estonian Heritage Society. These groups work to protect important historical things.

In the 1960s, Ilomets started collecting old science tools and items. These were things that the university no longer used. He stored them in the basement of the main building at the University of Tartu. This collection grew bigger and bigger. In 1976, his collection led to the creation of the University History Museum. This museum now shows the history of the university.

Even when he was 95 years old in 2016, Tullio Ilomets was still working at the University of Tartu. He was the oldest employee there at the time.

Awards and Honors

Tullio Ilomets received several important awards for his work:

  • 2001 – He received the Order of the White Star, third class. This is a high honor given by the President of Estonia.
  • 2001 – He was named an Honorary Citizen of Tartu. This means the city recognized him for his important contributions.
