The Tulsa Promenade Mall is a large shopping center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It covers about 926,426-square-foot (86,067.8 m2) and has two floors. This mall is home to many different stores and places to visit.

A shopping mall often has big stores called "anchor stores." These are usually well-known department stores that attract many shoppers. At Tulsa Promenade, some of the main anchor stores have included Dillard's, Sky Fitness, and previously Mervyn's and Macy's.

History of Tulsa Promenade Mall

The Tulsa Promenade Mall has changed a lot over the years. It started as a different kind of shopping place.

How the Mall Began (1965-1986)

The mall first opened in 1965. Back then, it was an outdoor shopping center called Southland. Imagine shopping outside, like a big market! Its main stores were Brown-Dunkin (which is now Dillard's) and JCPenney.

In 1986, the Southland center was completely rebuilt. It became the indoor mall we know today. The original Dillard's and JCPenney stores stayed. A new big store, Mervyn's, was added too.

Changes and Updates (1996-2005)

The mall kept growing and getting new features. In 1996, new parking garages were built. The Dillard's store also got bigger, and a new department store called Foley's joined the mall.

A movie theater, Hollywood Palace 12 Theatre, opened in 1998. In 1999, the mall got new carpets, decorations, and more restrooms. Over the next few years, more restaurants and shops opened, making the mall even better.

In 2005, the mall had another update. They added a fun play area for kids. New fountains and plants made the inside look nicer. A cool glass elevator was installed, and the outside of the mall got a fresh new look.

Changes in Anchor Stores (2005-2020)

Over time, some of the big anchor stores changed. Mervyn's, which was a major store on two floors, closed in 2005. Later, in 2011, Sky Fitness took over a large part of the first floor where Mervyn's used to be.

In 2017, Macy's announced they would close their store at the mall. It officially closed on March 26, 2017. Then, in January 2020, JCPenney also announced its closing. It shut down on April 24, 2020. This left Dillard's and Sky Fitness as the main anchor stores.

Mall Ownership and Weather Events

In August 2017, a strong tornado passed near the mall. Luckily, the Promenade Mall only had minor damage to its roof and structure. Stores were able to open again just two days later. No one inside the mall was hurt because the tornado hit very early in the morning.

In 2019, the mall faced some financial challenges. However, it was returned to its owner, Kohan Retail Investment Group, later that year.
