The 2020 presidential campaign of Tulsi Gabbard started on January 11, 2019. At the time, she was a U.S. Representative for Hawaii's 2nd congressional district. This means she was an elected official representing part of Hawaii in the U.S. Congress.

Running for President
Tulsi Gabbard decided to run for President of the United States in the 2020 election. She wanted to become the candidate for the Democratic Party.
Getting Ready to Run
Before she officially announced, people wondered if Tulsi Gabbard would run. In October 2018, a news outlet called Politico reported that she was thinking about it. She said she would decide after the 2018 elections.
Later, in December 2018, she appeared on a TV show called Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC. She told everyone that she was "seriously considering" running for president.
The Official Announcement
Tulsi Gabbard officially announced her plans to run on January 11, 2019. She shared her decision during an interview with CNN's Van Jones. She said she would make a formal announcement very soon after that interview.
Leaving the Race
To become a party's presidential candidate, a person needs to win special elections called "primaries" or "caucuses." They also need to do well in public opinion polls to qualify for debates.
Tulsi Gabbard did not win any of these primary elections. She also did not qualify for some of the later debates. Because of this, she decided to stop her campaign on March 19, 2020. After leaving the race, she announced that she supported Joe Biden for president.
