The Story of Tulum
How Tulum Grew Over Time
Back in the early 1990s, Tulum was a very small and quiet village. It was about 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) away from the ancient ruins. At that time, not many tourists visited the town itself. There were only a few small shops and simple beach huts called cabañas.
Tulum's Population Growth
By 2020, the number of people living in the Tulum area had grown a lot. There were 46,721 permanent residents. Many new homes were built in the jungle areas near downtown Tulum.
What You Can Find in Tulum Today
As more and more tourists started to visit, the town became very popular. Now, you can find many vacation rentals, small hotels, and hostels. There are also lots of restaurants and bars. Tulum town has everything you need, like grocery stores, boutiques, and places to rent bicycles. You can also find gyms, tour operators, banks, and internet cafes. Learning Spanish is also popular here, with many language schools available.
Tulum Becomes a Municipality
On March 13, 2008, Tulum officially became the main town of a new area called a municipality. This was the ninth municipality created in the state of Quintana Roo. A municipality is like a local government area.
A New Airport for Tulum

Exploring Tulum's Hotel Zone
What is the Hotel Zone?
About two kilometers from the town center, you'll find the "hotel zone." This area is right on the Tulum beach. It has grown to include over 70 hotels. Most of these hotels are cabañas, which are small huts built in the traditional Maya style. They have roofs made from palm leaves. Some fancier hotels are also available.
Food and Fun by the Beach
There are many new restaurants in the hotel zone, especially on the jungle side of the road. Some of these restaurants have become very famous around the world. You can also find beach clubs where you can relax by the sea. There are public beaches too, where everyone can enjoy the sand and water.
Changes in Prices and Electricity
Because Tulum has become so popular, the prices for places to stay have gone up. The very cheap cabañas with hammocks that used to be available are now harder to find. Most places still have a rustic, natural feel. However, electricity finally arrived in the "hotel zone" in 2020. Now, most hotels and restaurants there have power.
