Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Tunuyán River is an important river in the Argentine province of Mendoza. It starts high up in the Andes mountains, near Mount Tupungato. The river flows through different areas, providing water and opportunities for fun activities.

It is a popular spot for people who enjoy white water rafting. The river has exciting Class III rapids, which means the water moves fast and creates thrilling waves for rafters!

Where Does the Tunuyán River Start and Go?

The Tunuyán River begins its journey in the majestic Tupungato mountain, which is part of the huge Andes mountain range. From there, it first flows towards the northeast.

Journey Through Mendoza Province

As the river travels, it passes by the city of Tunuyán. Further along its path, the river's flow is controlled by the El Carrizal Dam. This dam helps manage the water for various uses. After the dam, the river changes direction, turning towards the east-southeast. It then flows near other cities like Rivadavia, Santa Rosa, and La Paz.

Reaching Its Final Destination

Finally, the Tunuyán River splits into two main branches: the Tunuyán Nuevo (which goes north) and the Tunuyán Viejo (which goes south). Both of these branches eventually join the Desaguadero River.
