The Tunxis Forest Headquarters House is a special old building in Hartland, Connecticut. It was built a long time ago, in 1936. This house is important because it's one of the few buildings left in Connecticut that was built by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps. Today, it's part of the main office area for the Tunxis State Forest. It was added to a list of important historical places in 1986, called the National Register of Historic Places.

About the Tunxis Forest Headquarters House

This house is located on the west side of North Hollow Road. It sits among other buildings that are part of the forest headquarters. It's a 1-1/2 story building, meaning it has one full floor and a smaller half-floor upstairs.

What Does It Look Like?

The house is made of wood, and it's about 40 feet long and 20 feet wide. The walls at each end of the house are built from fieldstone. These stones are laid in a natural, uneven way. Fireplaces and chimneys are built right into these stone walls. The rest of the outside of the house is covered with wooden shingles.

Inside the house, when it was first built, there was a living room and a kitchen on the first floor. Upstairs, there were three small bedrooms and a bathroom.

Its History and Purpose

The Tunxis Forest Headquarters House was built in 1936. It was constructed by a group of workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program during the Great Depression that gave jobs to young men. They worked on projects like building parks and forests. This house was made to be the main office building for the CCC camp in the area.

After the CCC program ended, the house was used as a home. The local forest manager lived there until 1948. It continued to be used as a home until 1974. After being empty for a while, the state decided to use it for a special educational program. This program helped young people who were having difficulties.
