Turicato is a municipality in the Mexican state of Michoacán. The name "Turicato" comes from a word that means a type of parasite. This parasite mainly lives in areas where there are cattle.

About Turicato Municipality

Turicato covers about 2.62% of the total land in the state of Michoacán. It is located in a region called "Tierra Caliente," which means "Hot Land." This name fits because it gets very hot during the dry season. In May, temperatures can even go above 110 degrees Fahrenheit. When the rainy season arrives in the summer, the area turns into a beautiful green forest. You can see many streams flowing through the municipality.

Life in Turicato

Turicato is a rural area with many rolling hills. The main town, also called Turicato, is quite small. It has fewer than 10,000 people living there. Most of the other residents live in tiny villages. These villages are often hidden among the hills. Many of them can only be reached by dirt roads. People in these villages often live a very traditional lifestyle.

Communities and Music

Some of the best-known communities in Turicato are Puruarán, Zárate, Cutzián Grande, El Ciruelo, and Santa Cruz. These villages are known for their music. Popular groups like La Trafa Norteña and Los Norteñitos come from here. They play at many different events, ceremonies, and dances.

Delicious Food and Fun Celebrations

The town of Turicato is famous for its amazing food. One of the most well-known dishes is carnitas. People travel from all over to try these delicious carnitas. Another very traditional food in the region is mole. This special dish has been made by the local people since before colonial times.

Tapadas: A Big Celebration

"Tapadas" are big five-day celebrations. They include exciting bull-riding, cockfighting, and dances. Famous Mexican music groups play all night long. People from nearby towns travel for hours to enjoy these events. One Tapada happens in mid-January in the village of San Cristobal De Los Guajes. Another one takes place in mid to late November in Santa Cruz De Morelos.
