What is the Twentieth Century Club?
The Twentieth Century Club was started by Charlotte Mulligan. She was a teacher, writer, and musician. Charlotte wanted a place where women could learn and grow. She imagined a club full of history, learning, and art.
A Place for Learning and Fun
While the club was known for its fun social events, learning was always the main goal. Since 1894, the club has hosted many famous speakers. Experts have shared their knowledge on all sorts of topics.
The club has seen many big changes in the world. When it started, women could not even vote. Today, women have many more chances. The Twentieth Century Club has been a part of this history. It shows how much society has changed over time.
The Club's Historic Building
In 1894, the club bought the land where it stands today. They hired a famous architecture firm, Green & Wicks, to design their clubhouse. This new building was added to an old Baptist church.
Building Design and Features
The clubhouse is a three-story building. It is built in the Italian Renaissance style. The building is 78 feet wide and 96 feet deep. The first floor is made of Indiana limestone. The rest of the building uses warm red bricks. It also has a terra cotta cornice, which is a decorative top edge.
Blue marble pillars stand across the front of the second story. These pillars are in the Ionic style, a classic design. In 1904, the old church part was taken down. A gym, pool, showers, and a hot room were added. Later, in 1933, more land was bought. A beautiful garden was added behind the club.
A Recognized Landmark
Because of its history and unique design, the building is very important. In 2011, the Twentieth Century Club building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special place that should be protected.
