Western Australia cadastral divisions
Map showing the 26 counties of Western Australia

Twiss County was one of the 26 special areas in Western Australia that were officially marked out in 1829. These areas were called "cadastral divisions," which are like big land sections used for keeping records and managing land.

The county was named after Horace Twiss. He was an important government official from 1828 to 1830, working as the Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. He was also a good friend of Lieutenant-Governor James Stirling, who was a key figure in setting up the Swan River Colony.

Where Was Twiss County?

Twiss County stretched from the towns of Muchea and Yanchep in the south. It went all the way north to places like Mogumber and Ledge Point.

This county covered parts of two other important land areas. These were the northern part of the Swan Land District and the north-western part of the Avon Land District. These districts are still used today for official land records and property titles.

Why Were Counties Created?

When new settlements were being set up, like the Swan River Colony in Western Australia, it was important to organize the land. Creating counties and other divisions helped the government keep track of who owned what land. It also made it easier to plan for new towns and roads.

These divisions were like a map for how the land was used and managed. They helped the colony grow in an organized way.
