Twyford Wood, also known as Twyford Forest, is a large forest area in Lincolnshire, England. It is owned by the Forestry Commission, which is a part of the British government. This forest is managed by a group called Forest Enterprise (England). Twyford Wood is mainly used for growing trees for timber, but it's also a great place for nature and outdoor activities.

A Look Back in Time

Before World War II (the Second World War), there was already a smaller forest here, about 60 hectares (148 acres) in size. During the war, from 1943 onwards, much of the land around this forest became an air base called RAF North Witham. The United States Air Force (USAAF) used this base for their planes.

After the war ended, the USAAF gave the base back to the Royal Air Force. The Royal Air Force then used it as a place to collect bombs and other explosives before they were safely removed.

In 1945, after the war, the Forestry Commission took over the forest and the old air base. In the 1950s, they planted many new trees, mostly Scots pine and Corsican pine. These trees were grown to be used by local businesses. The original oak trees that were already there were left untouched.

The name Twyford comes from a very old village that used to be in this area during the Middle Ages.

What's There Now?

Today, Forest Enterprise (England) still manages Twyford Wood. It is a commercial forest, meaning trees are grown there for timber. The forest covers about 195 hectares (481 acres) and is located about one mile east of a town called Colsterworth. To the south of Twyford Wood, you can find another forest called Beaumont Wood.

Wildlife and Nature

Twyford Wood is a special place for nature, especially for butterflies! The Lincolnshire branch of a group called Butterfly Conservation helps look after the butterfly areas here. You can find two rare types of butterflies in the wood: the dingy skipper and the grizzled skipper.

Visiting Twyford Wood

If you want to visit Twyford Wood, there is a small car park you can use. You can get to it from the A151 road. The wood is also used for off-road motor sports, which means vehicles like dirt bikes or 4x4s can drive on special tracks there.
