Saint Tydfil (also known as Tudful in Welsh) was a princess who lived a very long time ago, around the year 480. She is famous because the town of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales is named after her. The name "Merthyr" means "martyr," which is someone who dies for their beliefs.
Who Was Saint Tydfil?
Tydfil was a princess from an ancient Welsh kingdom called Brycheiniog. Her father was King Brychan. Legends say she was one of his many daughters. She is remembered for her strong faith.
Her Story
Sadly, the legend says that Tydfil was killed around the year 480. She was murdered along with her brother, Rhun. This happened in the place now known as Merthyr Tydfil. It is believed that she was killed by people who did not share her Christian faith. She was buried in the town.
There used to be a special "holy well" named Ffynnon Dydfil. This well was thought to be near the southern end of Well Street in Merthyr Tydfil. A "daughter church" (a smaller church connected to a main one) called St Tydfil's Well is in an area of Merthyr Tydfil called 'The Quar'.
Places Named After Her
Saint Tydfil is honored in several places. The old parish church in Merthyr Tydfil is dedicated to her. It is believed to be built on the very spot where she died.
Another church, Llysworney Church, in the Vale of Glamorgan, is also named after her. There was once a chapel in Llantwit Major that honored her too.
