Tykes Water is a small stream in Hertfordshire, England. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one, which in this case is the River Colne.

Where Tykes Water Begins

Every stream has a starting point, called its "headwaters." For Tykes Water, it begins as a group of small ditches that collect water. These ditches are found west of the A41 road, close to a town called Bushey.

All this water then flows into a place called Aldenham Reservoir. A reservoir is like a big, artificial lake built to store water.

From Reservoir to Lake

After leaving Aldenham Reservoir, the water from Tykes Water flows north. It then enters a lake located on the grounds of Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School. This lake is actually known as Tykes Water Lake!

From the school, the stream continues its journey north. It soon meets up with another stream that is also called Tykes Water. This meeting point, where two streams join, is called a "confluence." They meet near a place called Kendal Hall Farm.

The Main Journey of Tykes Water

Once the two Tykes Waters join together, the combined stream flows through the middle of Radlett. It runs right next to the railway line.

After passing through Radlett, Tykes Water continues to flow north. Finally, it reaches the River Colne near a village called Colney Street. The lower part of Tykes Water is sometimes known by another name: The Brook.

The Other Tykes Water

The second stream, which joins the main Tykes Water, has its own story. Some maps call it Borehamwood Brook. It starts south of Borehamwood, near Yavneh College.

This stream flows north through Borehamwood. Along its path, dams have been built to create pretty lakes in Aberford Park. These lakes are designed to look nice and are called "ornamental lakes." After leaving the park, this stream continues north through open countryside before joining the first Tykes Water.

Other Streams Joining In

Tykes Water also gets water from other smaller streams. One tiny stream collects water from farmland north of Borehamwood. It also joins the main Tykes Water near Kendal Hall Farm.

Another stream called Kitwells Brook joins Tykes Water just north of Radlett. Kitwells Brook drains water from the land to the east, towards a village called Shenley.
