Tyler Steinkamp (born March 7, 1995), known as Tyler1, is a popular American online streamer and professional League of Legends player. He became famous for his gaming streams and exciting personality.

Tyler1 first gained a lot of attention when he was banned from League of Legends in April 2016. This was because of his poor sportsmanship towards other players. His behavior earned him the nickname "The Most Toxic Player in North America." He was allowed to play again in 2018 after he showed he had changed. His first stream after returning had over 382,000 viewers on Twitch. This broke a record for a non-tournament stream on the site. By 2021, Tyler1 was one of the most popular online streamers in the world.

Tyler1's Career Journey

Early Days and Game Ban (2014–2016)

In 2014, Tyler1 reached the Challenger rank in League of Legends. This is the highest rank in the game. He was known for being very skilled with a character called Draven. However, he was also known for his bad behavior. He would say mean things to his teammates and sometimes even try to lose games on purpose. This led to many of his game accounts being permanently banned over the years.

Tyler1 later started acting even worse to get more viewers. In April 2016, he made a video showing his bad behavior. He promised to change his ways. This video got over 2 million views on YouTube. His Twitch channel grew from about 5,700 followers to over 92,000 followers that month. Even though his behavior didn't stay good for long, his audience kept growing. Other famous players even spoke out against his actions.

On April 30, 2016, a game developer from Riot Games announced that Tyler1 would no longer be allowed to have a League of Legends account. This was because of his long history of being unkind and bothering other players. Riot Games said they would ban any account he played on, even if he hadn't broken any rules yet.

Trying New Things (2016–2018)

After being banned, Tyler1 still tried to play League of Legends. But as soon as he streamed himself playing, Riot Games would quickly find out and ban his account. He also tried playing in his free time, making new accounts and climbing the ranks. These accounts were also found and banned. Since he couldn't play League of Legends, Tyler1 started playing other games to entertain his viewers. These included PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. He also did non-gaming streams, like dressing up as Bob Ross and teaching cooking. Even with the ban, his followers kept growing. He decided to leave university to focus on creating online content full-time.

In November 2017, Tyler1 hosted his own League of Legends tournament called the Tyler1 Championship Series (TCS). This was a fun copy of the official League of Legends Championship Series (LCS). Tyler1 streamed in front of a green screen to make it look like he was in big stadiums. The tournament had over 200,000 viewers at one time on Twitch. Even professional players and official commentators watched it. The winning team received $10,000, which Tyler1 paid for himself without any sponsors.

The Unban (2018)

In August 2017, a Riot Games community manager said Tyler1 would not be unbanned. This was because some of his recent accounts had still shown bad behavior. However, in October, a Riot Games employee made some very inappropriate comments about Tyler1 online. The company quickly responded, saying "what was said is NOT okay." They apologized to Tyler1 and the League of Legends community. Tyler1 said it was tough that some people still held a grudge and didn't believe he had changed. A few days later, it was reported that the employee no longer worked at Riot Games.

Fans started bringing "#FreeTyler1" signs to official LCS games. Riot Games later stopped this at the summer finals. Soon after, Tyler1 announced that he got an email from Riot Games. His ban would be lifted at the end of the year if his recent game accounts were "clean" of bad behavior.

In January 2018, Tyler1 was finally unbanned. His first stream after being unbanned had over 382,000 viewers. This broke the record for the most viewers for a single streamer on Twitch.

Back to League of Legends (2018–Present)

Today, Tyler1 is one of the most popular online streamers. He has estimated that he earns more than $300,000 each year just from selling his merchandise. He believes he has earned over $5 million in total from his streaming career. He has won the "Best League of Legends Streamer" award at The Streamer Awards in 2021 and 2022.

In June 2018, Tyler1 admitted he played League of Legends a lot. This led other players to share their own stories about how much they played the game.

In September 2018, Riot Games invited Tyler1 to play in a "Streamer Showmatch" at the Oakland Arena. He also helped commentate for the official 2018 NA LCS Summer Finals.

The Tyler1 Championship Series (TCS) returned in November 2018 with a bigger prize pool of $50,000, again paid for by Tyler1. People praised how much better the tournament was. It had become a serious online tournament. The TCS returned for a third time in December 2019. It had over 90,000 viewers at its peak.

In 2020, Tyler1 started a "Jungle Challenge." He aimed to reach the Challenger rank in the game while playing only the jungle role. He achieved this goal in May 2020 after playing many games. He did the same for the top lane role in June 2021 and the mid lane role in September 2021. In February 2022, he reached Challenger in the final role, support. This is a rare achievement, as few players have reached Challenger in all five roles in League of Legends. Riot Games celebrated his accomplishment and sent him a special gift of five medals.

In October 2020, Tyler1 joined the South Korean esports team T1 as a content creator. The team even made a video with him and famous player Faker. Tyler1 and T1 parted ways in 2022.

In 2023, Tyler1 became very interested in online chess. He played thousands of games in just a few months. Later that year, he was invited to compete in an amateur chess tournament called PogChamps. In February 2024, he won "Best Chess Streamer" at the 2023 Streamer Awards. By March 2024, he reached a high chess rating on Chess.com, placing him among the top players on the site.

Even after his unban, Tyler1 has sometimes shown poor sportsmanship. In October 2022, during a stream for Overwatch 2, it was revealed he was already banned from the game's chat. This was a leftover from a 10-year ban in the first Overwatch game. In July 2022, after losing a game, he accused a teammate of breaking game rules. The players involved were removed from their amateur team after an investigation. In 2024, Tyler1 made some unkind remarks about a professional player after a game.
