Type rating facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A type rating is like a special license that pilots need to fly certain big or complex airplanes. Think of it as an extra permission slip that shows a pilot has had special training for a specific type of aircraft. Countries have aviation authorities, like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States, that decide which planes are complex enough to require this extra training.

What is a Type Rating?

A type rating is an official approval added to a pilot's main license. It means the pilot has learned all the specific skills needed to fly a particular model of aircraft. For example, flying a small, simple plane is very different from flying a huge passenger jet. Because large planes have many advanced systems and controls, pilots need extra, detailed training just for that specific plane type.

Why Do Pilots Need Special Training?

Pilots need type ratings mainly for safety. Large airplanes, like those used by airlines, are incredibly complex machines. They have many different systems for navigation, engines, hydraulics, and more. A pilot must know exactly how to operate every part of that specific aircraft.

Keeping Flights Safe

This special training makes sure pilots are fully prepared for any situation in the air. It helps them understand the unique features and emergency procedures for each plane. This way, everyone on board can feel safe and confident during the flight.

Which Aircraft Require a Type Rating?

Generally, larger and more complex aircraft require a type rating. This often includes:

  • Most jet aircraft, like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320.
  • Aircraft with multiple engines that weigh a certain amount.
  • Planes that need a crew of more than one pilot.

Who Decides?

The rules for which planes need a type rating are set by the aviation authority in each country. They look at the plane's size, speed, number of engines, and how complicated its systems are. If a plane is considered complex enough, a type rating will be required for pilots to fly it.

How Does a Pilot Get a Type Rating?

Getting a type rating is a big step for a pilot. It involves intensive training and tests.

The Training Process

  • Ground School: Pilots first spend many hours in a classroom learning about the specific aircraft. They study its systems, performance, and emergency procedures in detail.
  • Simulator Training: This is a key part! Pilots practice flying the aircraft in a full-motion flight simulator. These simulators are incredibly realistic and can mimic all kinds of weather conditions and emergencies without any real danger. Pilots practice everything from normal takeoffs and landings to engine failures and other critical situations.
  • Checkride: After completing the training, a pilot must pass a final test, called a "checkride," with an examiner. This test includes both written and practical parts, often in the simulator, to prove they can safely operate the aircraft.

What Happens After Training?

Once a pilot passes the checkride, the type rating is added to their pilot license. This means they are now officially authorized to fly that specific aircraft type. Pilots often get multiple type ratings throughout their career as they fly different kinds of planes.
