Tyre (hamlet), New York facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tyre is a small community called a hamlet in Seneca County, New York, United States. It is found in the middle part of the larger area known as the Town of Tyre. Tyre is about 6 miles (10 km) north of another hamlet called Seneca Falls. It sits at a height of 410 feet (125 m) above sea level. People sometimes call this hamlet "Tyre City."

Discovering Tyre

Tyre is located where several roads meet, including Gravel Road, East Tyre Road, Lamb Road, and West Tyre Road. These roads help connect the community to other places nearby.

The Historic Tyre Band Hall

One of the most interesting places in Tyre is the Tyre Band Hall. This old building was first built in 1831 on what is now Gravel Road. It was originally used as a church. After about 30 years, the church stopped using the building.

From Church to Community Hub

Over the years, the Tyre Band Hall was used for different things. It even served as a grange hall, which was a meeting place for farmers. In 1919, a group called the Tyre Cornet Band took over the empty building. They used it for their music practices and concerts. It also became a popular community center for everyone in Tyre. A kitchen was added so people could have food during special events.

A Place for Town Meetings

The Tyre Band Hall was very important for the local government too. For many years in the early to mid-1900s, it was used as the Tyre Town Hall. This is where important decisions about the town were made.

In 1971, the Town of Tyre bought the building. They moved it to Lamb Road, next to the Tyre Highway Department. Thanks to money from the state and community fundraisers, the building has been fixed up. Even though a new town building was built in 2016 on NY Route 318, the Tyre Band Hall is still used today as a community center for the people of Tyre.
