Life in Ucanha: The Early Days
People lived in Ucanha during a time called the Late Preclassic period. This was from about 300 years before Christ (B.C.) to about 250 years after Christ (A.D.). The town was quite large, covering about 2.2 square kilometers. It was home to around 400 families.
Ucanha's Connection to Uci
Ucanha was not alone. It was connected to a bigger town called Uci. A wide stone road, known as a causeway, linked the two places. Uci is located about 13 kilometers to the west of Ucanha.
The Amazing Stucco Mask Discovery
Finding a Giant Mask
In 2017, something very special was found in Ucanha. Archaeologists discovered a huge, brightly colored stucco mask. Stucco is a type of plaster used for decorating buildings. This amazing mask is about two meters tall. It was found inside a building near the center of Ucanha.
Why This Mask is Special
Masks like this have been found at other Maya sites. However, this is the only one known for this part of Mexico. Scientists have carefully repaired the mask. Now it looks just like it did when it was new.
Protecting the Ancient Mask
After studying the mask, the archaeologists buried it again. They did this to keep it safe and protected. The Ucanha site is not yet legally protected, so reburying the mask helps preserve it for the future.
