Ugo Mifsud Bonnici was born on November 8, 1932. He is a Maltese politician. He served as the fifth President of Malta from 1994 to 1999.

Early Life and Education
Ugo Mifsud Bonnici was born in Cospicua, Malta. His father was Professor Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici. Ugo went to the Lyceum school. Later, he studied at the Royal University of Malta. He earned a degree in Arts in 1952. In 1955, he became a lawyer. He worked in many courts across Malta. On May 3, 1959, he married Gemma Bianco. They have three children: Carmelo, Anton, and Jeanne-Pia.
Starting in Politics
Ugo Mifsud Bonnici followed his father into politics. He joined the Nationalist Party. In 1966, he ran in the General Elections. He was elected to represent the 2nd District. This area included towns like Cospicua and Vittoriosa. He was re-elected in every election he took part in after that. For 15 years, from 1972 to 1987, he was the Nationalist Party's spokesperson for Education. In 1977, he also became the President of the Party's main councils.
Working in the Government
In 1987, the Nationalist Party won the election. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici was made a Minister in the government. He became the Minister of Education. His job included looking after Education, the Environment, and Culture. He also oversaw Youth, Museums, and Sport. In 1990, he became the Minister of Education and the Interior. After the 1992 elections, he was named Minister of Education and Human Resources.
As a Member of Parliament, he helped update Malta's laws. He was part of groups that drafted important changes. For example, he helped with the changes that made Malta a Republic. As a Minister, he worked on new laws. These included the Education Act and the Environment Act. He also worked on the National Archives Act. He tried hard to make public schools better.
Becoming President
Ugo Mifsud Bonnici became the President of Malta on April 4, 1994. He served for a full five years. His term ended on the same date in 1999. Guido de Marco took over as President after him.
His Writings
Dr. Mifsud Bonnici is a writer. He has written many articles for newspapers. Some of these articles were put into two books. These books are called Il-Linja t-Tajba and Biex il-Futur Reġa' Beda. He also worked as an editor for a magazine. The magazine was named Malta Letterarja.
