Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, born on November 8, 1932, is a Maltese politician. He served as the fifth President of Malta from 1994 to 1999. He is also known for his work in education and law.

Early Life and Education
Ugo Mifsud Bonnici was born in Cospicua, Malta. His father, Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, was a professor. Ugo went to St Edward's College, Malta, and the Lyceum. He then studied at the Royal University of Malta.
He earned a degree in Arts in 1952. Later, in 1955, he became a lawyer. He worked as a lawyer in various courts across Malta. In 1959, he married Gemma Bianco. They have three children: Carmelo, Anton, and Jeanne-Pia.
Starting in Politics
Ugo Mifsud Bonnici followed his father into politics. In 1966, he ran in the General Elections for the Nationalist Party. He was elected to represent the 2nd District. This area included towns like Cospicua and Vittoriosa.
He was re-elected in every election he took part in after that. For 15 years, from 1972 to 1987, he was the Nationalist Party's main spokesperson for education. In 1977, he also became the President of the party's main councils.
Serving in the Cabinet
In 1987, the Nationalist Party won the election. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici was chosen to be a Minister in the government. He became the Minister of Education. His job included looking after education, the environment, broadcasting, culture, youth, museums, and sports.
In 1990, his role changed slightly. He became the Minister of Education and the Interior. After the 1992 elections, he was appointed Minister of Education and Human Resources.
As a Member of Parliament, he helped update Malta's laws. He was part of committees that worked on important changes. For example, he helped draft the changes that made Malta a Republic. As a Minister, he worked on laws like the Education Act and the Environment Act. He also worked hard to make public schools better.
Presidency of Malta
Ugo Mifsud Bonnici became the President of Malta on April 4, 1994. He served a full five-year term. His time as President ended on April 4, 1999. After him, Guido de Marco became the next President.
Published Works
Dr. Mifsud Bonnici is a writer. He has written many articles for newspapers. Some of his articles were put into two books. These books are titled Il-Linja t-Tajba - L-Aħjar Artikli ta' Dottor Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and Biex il-Futur Reġa' Beda. He also spent some years as the editor of a literary magazine called Malta Letterarja.
Awards and Recognition
In 1994, Ugo Mifsud Bonnici received a special award. He was made a Companion of Honour of the National Order of Merit. This award is given to the President of Malta.
