Ulia Fidentia or simply Ulia was an important Roman town, known as a municipium, located in the province of Hispania Baetica. Today, you can find its ancient site where the city of Montemayor is now, in the Córdoba region of Spain.

What Was Ulia Fidentia?

Ulia Fidentia was a municipium, which was a type of Roman town. People living in a municipium often had some of the same rights as Roman citizens. This meant they could vote and take part in Roman government. Ulia was located in Hispania Baetica, a Roman province in what is now southern Spain. This area was famous for its olive oil and other goods.

Ulia's Loyalty During War

During a big conflict called Caesar's Civil War, Ulia Fidentia showed great loyalty. This war was fought between two powerful Roman leaders: Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great. Most towns in the area, called Hispania Ulterior, chose to support Pompey.

However, Ulia was one of the few towns that stayed loyal to Caesar. Because of its strong support, Caesar honored the town. He gave it the special name Fidentia. This word means "loyalty" or "trust" in Latin. It showed how much Caesar appreciated Ulia's faithfulness during a very difficult time.
