Who Was Ulrich von Türheim?

Ulrich von Türheim was a famous writer from the Middle Ages. He lived in Germany and wrote in a language called Middle High German. This was a form of German spoken a long time ago. He is known for finishing stories that other famous writers had started but not completed.

His Important Works

Ulrich von Türheim wrote three main works that we still know about today:

  • A story called Tristan: This was his way of finishing a famous legend about Tristan that another writer, Gottfried von Strassburg, had left unfinished.
  • A story called Rennewart: This story continued the tale of Willehalm, which the famous writer Wolfram von Eschenbach had not finished.
  • Parts of a story called Cligès: These pieces were based on a story by a French writer named Chrétien de Troyes. We don't know if Ulrich's Cligès was a brand new story or if he was finishing another lost version by a writer named Konrad Fleck.

Historians are not sure which of these works Ulrich wrote first. However, most people think that Rennewart was the last story he wrote.

His Supporter

Ulrich von Türheim had a special helper or sponsor named Conrad of Winterstetten. A sponsor, or patron, is someone who gives money and support to an artist or writer so they can create their work.
