Ultramort is a small village located in the province of Girona. It is part of the autonomous community of Catalonia, which is in Spain.
Ultramort's History
Ultramort was first written about in official documents way back in the year 1046. At that time, its name was "Ultramorte." Over the years, more and more mentions of this place appeared in records.
What Does "Ultramort" Mean?
The name "Ultramort" has an interesting origin. It comes from two older words:
- The Latin word ULTRA, which means "beyond."
- An older, pre-Roman word, MURTA or MURTRA, which means "still water," "well," "pit," or "puddle."
So, when you put them together, "Ultramort" means something like "beyond the still water" or "beyond the pond."
How Ultramort Got Its Name
Historians believe the name was given from the point of view of three nearby villages: Rúpia, Parlavà, and Foixà. Until 1316, Ultramort seemed to depend on one of these larger villages.
Imagine someone from Rúpia looking towards Ultramort. They might have seen a small village that was "on the other side of the pond" or "beyond the still water." This is how the name ULTRA-MURTA likely came to be.
