Unattractiveness or ugliness describes when someone's looks are not considered pleasing or beautiful. It's about how people see physical features. This idea often depends on what a culture or person thinks is beautiful.

What is Unattractiveness?

Unattractiveness means that a person or thing is not pleasant to look at. It leads to a very low opinion of how something looks. Being unattractive means being unpleasing, unwanted, or even offensive to the eye. Other words for this include hideousness or unsightliness. Sometimes, people use informal terms like turn-offs.

History of Views on Looks

Throughout history, people have thought about what makes someone attractive or unattractive. Some famous thinkers even used their own looks to help them understand the world.

Philosophers and Their Views

Jean-Paul Sartre, a famous French philosopher, had a "lazy eye" and an uneven face. He said that his lifelong struggle with how he looked helped shape his ideas.

Socrates, an ancient Greek philosopher, was also known for his looks. He believed that philosophy could help a person overcome their outward appearance. He thought that inner wisdom was more important than outer beauty.

Abraham Lincoln's Appearance

Abraham Lincoln, a former US President, was often described as not being handsome. One person at the time said, "to say that he is ugly is nothing; to add that his figure is grotesque, is to convey no adequate impression."

However, his unique appearance actually helped him connect with people. His law partner, William Herndon, wrote that Lincoln was "plain-looking and plain-acting." He seemed simple and had no fancy ways. Lincoln often looked sad, and this made his friends feel for him. This sympathy was one reason for his great success.

Being Judged for Looks

Sometimes, people face unfair treatment because of how they look. This is a type of prejudice.

What is Lookism?

Discrimination or unfair treatment against people seen as unattractive is sometimes called lookism. Other terms include cacophobia or aschemophobia. If someone is treated unfairly because of a physical difference, it might be called ableism.

Teratophobia is a strong dislike or fear of people who look very different or have visible marks. When this dislike leads to unfair treatment, it can be a form of bullying.

In dating, judging others only by their looks is common. However, many people see this approach as shallow. Some studies even suggest that people considered unattractive might be treated differently in certain situations. It's a complex issue, as some believe society can be suspicious of both extreme beauty and extreme unattractiveness.

Laws Against Lookism

Some places have made it illegal to treat people unfairly based on how they look. For example, in 1995, the Australian state of Victoria made lookism illegal. Washington D.C. in the United States also has laws against it. These laws aim to protect people from discrimination based on their appearance.
