The Union Block is an old and important business building in downtown Lima, Ohio. It was built a long time ago, in 1878. This building has three stories and is made of brick. It has a unique shape and a roof that slopes down.

Discovering the Union Block's History
The spot where the Union Block stands has always been important for businesses in Lima. Even before the Union Block, Lima's very first hotel was built there.
The Union Block was built when Lima was growing very fast. In the 1870s, railroads became very important in Lima. This helped the city grow a lot. The Union Block was one of many big business buildings built during this exciting time.
Exploring the Building's Design
The Union Block shows a special style of building called Victorian architecture. This style was popular during the time of Queen Victoria.
Outside Details
Some cool things you can see on the outside are fancy stone pieces above the windows, called lintels. There is also decorative stone trim around the building.
Inside Features
Inside, the first floor has strong iron posts. There is also a staircase made of cast iron, which is a very strong type of iron. Each section of the building has a group of windows, usually two or three together.
A Historic Landmark
In 1982, the Union Block was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. The Union Block was added because its architecture was well-preserved.
Sixteen other buildings in Lima were added to this list at the same time. They were all part of a special group of important buildings in downtown Lima. Two other buildings on Public Square were also on this list: the Neal Clothing Building and the First National Bank and Trust Building.
