The First National Bank and Trust Building is a historic building. You can find it on Public Square in downtown Lima, Ohio, United States. This tall, rectangular building was finished in 1926. It was designed by Weary & Alford Company. This company was an architecture firm from Chicago.

From 1926 to 1974, the building was home to the First National Bank and Trust Company. After 1974, the company became part of Huntington Bank. The building has twelve stories. Its outside walls are covered with a type of stone called Indiana Limestone. Each row of windows has an arch-shaped window at the very top floor. The decorative panels between these arch windows are connected.

A Look Back at the Building's History

The bank started as the "Lima Trust Company" in 1903. In its first years, it used a Masonic building. Starting in 1906, it moved to a smaller building. This building is now gone. The bank stayed there until 1926. That's when it moved into its brand new, taller home.

During the early 1900s, Lima was a very busy city. This was because of railroads and the oil industry. Many big buildings were built in downtown Lima. This included two skyscrapers. Most of these new buildings used the Chicago Style of architecture. Later, Lima's economy slowed down. New large buildings stopped being built downtown. Almost all new construction happened in the city's outer areas. This makes the First National Bank and Trust Building one of the newer big buildings in downtown Lima.

In 1982, the building was recognized as very important. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important places. It was one of seventeen Lima buildings added to this list. They were part of a group called the "Lima Multiple Resource Area." This group focused on buildings in Lima that were special because of their design.

Home to Falcons!

The First National Bank and Trust Building is also important for local ornithology. This is the study of birds. The building is a nesting spot for peregrine falcons. These are very fast birds. It is part of the Midwest Peregrine Falcon Restoration Project. This project helps bring back peregrine falcons in the Midwest.
