The Union County Courthouse is an important building in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It serves as the main courthouse for Union County, New Jersey. Elizabeth is the "county seat," which means it's where the county government is located.
This tall building has 17 stories and stands about 238 feet (72.5 meters) high. It was finished in 1931 and is the tallest building in Elizabeth. The courthouse is designed in a style called Neoclassical. This style often uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.
The courthouse is part of a special area called the Mid-Town Historic District. This means it's an important historical building that helps make the district special.
Building Design and Features
The main courthouse building, with its 17-story tower, was designed by architects Oakley and Son. It was completed in 1931. The courthouse is not just one building. It's a group of buildings that work together.
- There's a 3-story part of the complex.
- An annex building with 7 stories was built in 1927.
- Another annex building with 5 stories was added in 1964.
- An 8-story courtroom building was completed in 1932.
These different parts help the courthouse handle all its important work.
Wildlife at the Courthouse
In May 2015, something interesting happened at the courthouse. Peregrine falcons were found nesting on the building. These birds are known for being very fast flyers. It's cool to think of wild birds living on top of such a big city building!
History of the Courthouse
Before the current building, there was an earlier courthouse in Union County. This older building was designed by architects Ackerman and Ross. Work on it started in February 1903 and finished in April 1905.
Newspapers from that time mentioned that two special stone tablets were being made for the entrance. One tablet said when the courthouse was started and finished, and who the architects were. This shows how important the building was even back then.
