Union Station is an Amtrak train station in downtown Brattleboro, Vermont. It is a stop for the Vermonter train service. Most of the station building, built in 1915, is home to the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center. Amtrak uses a waiting room on the lower floor for train passengers. This important building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

As of 2020, Amtrak and the town of Brattleboro are planning a new, longer platform. This new platform will make it easier for everyone to get on and off the trains. It will be the first of its kind in Vermont. Construction for this project is planned to start in early 2022.

Brattleboro's Union Station: A Hub for Travelers

Union Station is a key spot for train travel in Brattleboro. It serves as a stop for Amtrak, which runs long-distance passenger trains. The Vermonter train connects Vermont with other states. It offers a daily round trip, meaning it goes both ways once a day.

What's Inside Today?

The main part of the 1915 station building is now the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center. This museum opened in 1972. It shows different art exhibits and local history. Train passengers can still use a special waiting room on the lower floor. This allows people to wait comfortably for their train.

Making Travel Easier: Future Plans

Amtrak and the town are working together to improve the station. They plan to build a new, accessible platform. This platform will be long and at the same height as the train doors. This makes it much easier for people with wheelchairs or strollers to board. It will be the first platform like this in Vermont. This project is expected to cost about $4.5 million.

Station History: More Than Just Trains

The current Union Station building was finished in 1915. Before that, there was an older station. Across the tracks from the main building is a smaller wooden building. It is called the Archery Building. Some people thought it was the original passenger station. However, it was likely used for freight or as a railroad office.
