The Union Trust Company Building is a historic bank building in Springfield, Massachusetts. You can find it at 1351 Main Street. This building was built in 1907. It is a fantastic example of a building style called Beaux-Arts architecture. Only a few buildings in Springfield were designed by the famous architects Peabody and Stearns. This building is one of them! People especially notice its front, which looks like a huge arch built to celebrate a victory. Because it's so special, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Union Trust Company Building is in downtown Springfield. It sits on the east side of Main Street. It is between Harrison Avenue and Bruce Landon Way.

What the Building Looks Like

This building has two stories. It is made of stone, with a beautiful limestone front. The bottom part, or foundation, is made of marble. The front of the building was designed to look like a "triumphal arch." Imagine a giant arch that people would walk through after winning a battle!

The main entrance is set back from two very large stone supports, called piers. These piers hold up a big, rounded arch. Above the arch, there is a large, decorated ledge called a cornice. On top of that is a low wall, or parapet. The inside of the arch has pretty rose shapes. The spaces next to the arch, called spandrels, have cool carvings. These carvings were made by an artist named John Evans. Above the entrance, there is another small ledge. It has a fancy design with a shield-like shape and baskets on the sides.

A Bit of History

The Union Trust Company started in 1906. It was formed when three banks in Springfield joined together. One of these banks was the Springfield Bank, which was very old, founded in 1814. This building was the main office for the Union Trust Company. It stayed a bank headquarters until 1970.

The building is one of the few in the Pioneer Valley area of Massachusetts designed by Peabody and Stearns. This architectural firm from Boston was very well-known across the country. The Union Trust Company Building was officially recognized as a historic place in 1978.
