United Congregational Church (Bridgeport, Connecticut) facts for kids
The United Congregational Church of Bridgeport is a church that has been a big part of the City of Bridgeport for a very long time. It was started way back in 1695 by English settlers, often called Pilgrims. These settlers made their homes near the Pequonock River, which is now known as the Housatonic River. The area they settled was called Strat-field because it was between the towns of Fairfield and Stratford.
For over 325 years, the United Congregational Church has been an important place for the community. It has used eight different buildings during its history. One of its old buildings, located at 877 Park Avenue, is very special. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its historical importance. This building is now used by the Bridgeport Islamic Community Center.
