United Nations General Assembly Resolution 68/262 facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 68/262 is an important decision made by the United Nations General Assembly on March 27, 2014. This resolution was a response to Russia taking over a part of Ukraine called Crimea. It was officially named "Territorial integrity of Ukraine".

This resolution was not a law that countries had to follow, but it showed that many countries believed Ukraine's borders should stay the same. It also said that a vote held in Crimea in 2014, which led to Russia taking over, was not valid. One hundred (100) countries supported this resolution. Eleven (11) countries voted against it, 58 countries chose not to vote (they abstained), and 24 countries were not there when the vote happened.

What Is This Resolution About?

This resolution is about a big idea called "territorial integrity." This means that a country's borders should be respected by other countries. It's like saying, "This land belongs to this country, and no one else should take it." The United Nations General Assembly wanted to make it clear that they supported Ukraine keeping all its land within its official borders.

Why Was This Resolution Needed?

The resolution was introduced by several countries, including Canada, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine itself. Before this, the United Nations Security Council tried many times to solve the problem in Crimea. They met seven times, but Russia, which is a permanent member of the Security Council, used its veto power. This meant Russia could stop any decision the Security Council tried to make about Crimea. Because the Security Council couldn't agree, the issue was brought to the General Assembly, where no single country has a veto.
