The US Post Office—South Hadley Main is a special historic building located at 1 Hadley Street in South Hadley, Massachusetts. It was built in 1940 during a time when the government created jobs to help people. This post office is a great example of a building style called Classical Revival architecture, which looks like ancient Greek or Roman buildings but in a simpler way. Because it's so important, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This list helps protect places that are important to American history.

Discover the South Hadley Post Office

The South Hadley Post Office stands in an important spot at the northern end of the town's main green. This green space is just south of the building, across Hadley Street.

Building Design and Materials

The post office is a single-story building made of strong materials. It has red bricks and light-colored limestone for decoration. The roof is flat. The front of the building is quite simple, with several limestone columns. Above these columns, there's a limestone band that goes all around the top of the building. The walls are mostly brick, resting on a sturdy granite base. Granite steps lead up to the main entrance.

Inside the Post Office

Even though the inside of the building was updated in the 1960s, some of its original features are still there. You can still see beautiful marble on the lower parts of the walls and some of the original wooden details.

History of the Post Office

This post office was built in 1940. It was designed by an architect named Leon Pernice, who worked in West Springfield.

Building for Jobs

The post office was built during a time when the United States government was trying to create jobs for people. They wanted buildings that could be designed and built quickly. This helped many people find work during a difficult economic period.

Changes Over Time

In 1968, the building was made much larger. A big addition was built at the back. Also, the lobby area inside was updated with glass and aluminum dividers and new fluorescent lights.
