The Taunton Post Office Building
What Does It Look Like?
The main Taunton Post Office is on the west side of Taunton Green. It is a single-story building. It is covered in limestone. The roof is a special shape called a truncated hip roof.
The front of the building has large, impressive columns. These are called Tuscan columns. Behind them is the main entrance. These columns, along with square pillars on the sides, hold up a decorative band. This band goes around the whole building.
Inside the Post Office
When you go inside, you will find a long, wide lobby. The floor is made of Terrazzo marble. The lower part of the walls has high marble panels. This style makes the inside look grand and classic.
A Bit of History
The building was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect. This office was led by James A. Wetmore at the time. It was built between 1931 and 1932. The money for its construction came from the Works Progress Administration. This was a government program during the Great Depression.
The new post office replaced an older building. The previous building was built in the late 1800s. It was in a style called Richardsonian Romanesque. The land where the post office stands today once belonged to Samuel Crocker. He was a very important businessman in Taunton.
