The University of Greenland (also known as Greenlandic: Ilisimatusarfik Kalaallit Nunaat) is the only university in Greenland. It is located in Nuuk, the capital city. Most classes are taught in Danish. Some are in Greenlandic, and guest teachers often teach in English.

In 2018, about 205 students attended the university. Most of these students were from Greenland. The university has around 14 teachers and 5 staff members who help with administration. Many students from Greenland choose to study at universities in Denmark instead.

History of the University

The University of Greenland was started in 1987. Its goal was to offer higher education right there in Greenland. At first, it was in an old church building called Neu Herrnhut. In 2009, the university moved to a special new building called Ilimmarfik. The university has a budget of about 14.8 million DKK.

What You Can Study

The university offers many different study programs:

  • Teacher training and education
  • Humanities (like history and languages)
  • Social and behavioral science (like psychology)
  • Business and administration
  • Law
  • Health
  • Social services

The university also focuses on special areas:

  • Greenlandic culture and history
  • Greenlandic politics
  • Greenlandic literature and media
  • Health in the Arctic region
  • Climate and society

Students can earn a baccalaureate degree (a first university degree) in all subjects. They can also get a Master's Degree in most areas, except for theology. The university even offers programs for a doctorate degree (the highest university degree).

University Leadership

Tine Pars became the head of Ilisimatusarfik in 2009. She took over after the previous head, Ole Marquardt, left his job. He resigned because of new rules for the university that started in 2007.

Guest Teachers

Because the university has a small number of full-time teachers, many special classes are taught by guest teachers. These teachers often come from universities in Denmark or other countries. Guest teachers at Ilisimatusarfik are often experts in research about Greenland. They teach classes while also doing their research in Greenland.

University Library

The university library has about 30,000 books and other materials.
