Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The University of London Computer Centre (ULCC) was a special place created in 1968. It was the very first facility in London to have a supercomputer! Its main job was to help all the colleges of the University of London with their science and education research.

ULCC started by using large computers from a company called CDC. Later, from 1982 to 1991, it offered a national service using powerful Cray supercomputers. These were like the fastest computers available at the time! More recently, it used a powerful Convex supercomputer.

ULCC also became a very important hub for connecting computer networks in the UK and around the world. It managed a big part of the JANET network, which helps universities and research centers share information. It also handled many international connections.

After the 1990s, ULCC stopped offering supercomputer services. It then focused on providing other important computer services to schools, universities, and public organizations. It also did research in areas like digital preservation (keeping digital information safe for a long time) and e-learning (learning using computers and the internet).

In 2009, after 40 years, ULCC moved from its original building at 20 Guilford Street. This building was specially built in the 1960s to hold those early supercomputers. ULCC is now located within the main university buildings at Senate House.

In 2015, ULCC became a part of CoSector - University of London, continuing its work in supporting education and public services with technology.
