What Did the ULCC Do?
The ULCC did many important things over the years. It was a hub for connecting computers across the UK and even internationally.
Connecting Computers Across the UK
The ULCC played a big part in connecting computers all over the United Kingdom. It ran the Network Operations and Service Centre for a network called JANET. JANET is a special network that connects universities and research centers across the UK. The ULCC was one of the biggest centers for this network.
Linking to the World
The ULCC also helped connect the UK to other countries through various international links. It worked with an organization called UKERNA to make sure these connections ran smoothly. This helped researchers in the UK share information with people all over the world.
New Focus for ULCC
After the 1990s, the ULCC stopped offering its supercomputer service. But it didn't stop helping people!
Helping Education and Public Services
Since then, the ULCC has focused on providing IT services to schools, universities, and public organizations. This means they help these groups with their computer systems, software, and online tools.
Protecting Digital Information
The ULCC also does important research in areas like digital preservation. This is about making sure that digital information, like old documents or photos stored on computers, can be kept safe and readable for a very long time. Imagine trying to open a file from 50 years ago – digital preservation helps make that possible!
Learning Online
They also work on e-learning. This is all about using technology to help people learn, like creating online courses or educational websites.
Where Was ULCC Located?
For 40 years, the ULCC was located at 20 Guilford Street. This building was specially built in the 1960s to hold those huge, early supercomputers.
Moving to a New Home
In 2009, the ULCC moved to a new location. It is now based within the main University of London building, called Senate House.
Becoming Part of CoSector
In 2015, the ULCC became part of a larger group called CoSector - University of London. This means it joined forces with other services within the university to continue its important work.
