A Look at History: How UNISA Started

The area around Salerno has a long history of learning. Long ago, between the 900s and 1200s, there was a very important medical school called the Schola Medica Salernitana. It was one of the best medical schools in Europe!

However, over time, other new universities started their own medical schools. The old Salerno school eventually closed down.

The modern University of Salerno began much later, in 1944. It started as a college to train teachers, called the "Giovanni Cuomo" University Institute. In 1968, this institute became a state university, which means it is supported by the government. Since then, many more students have joined the University of Salerno.

What You Can Study at UNISA

The University of Salerno offers many different courses. Students can choose from 10 main areas of study, called faculties. These include:

  • Arts and Philosophy
  • Economics
  • Education (for future teachers)
  • Engineering
  • Foreign Languages and Literature
  • Law
  • Medicine
  • Mathematics, Physics, and Natural Sciences
  • Pharmacy
  • Political Science

The university also has a huge library called "Eduardo R. Caianiello." It holds over 400,000 books! This makes it one of the biggest book collections in Italy.

Researching the Mediterranean World

In 2015, a new research center was created at the University of Salerno. It's called the International Centre for Studies and Research "Mediterranean Knowledge." This center brings together 14 research groups from different universities around the Mediterranean Sea.

Its main goal is to learn more about the Mediterranean region and share this knowledge. They publish books and a journal to help spread information about the area's history, culture, and important topics. They also hold meetings and conferences.
