A Look Back in Time

The University of Salerno has a long and interesting history. It is connected to a very old and famous medical school.

The Ancient Medical School

Long ago, between the 900s and 1200s, there was a special medical school in Salerno. It was called the Schola Medica Salernitana. This school was one of the most important places in Europe to learn about medicine.

Over time, other universities started their own medical schools. The Salerno school even joined with the University of Naples for a short period. But eventually, by the 1300s, the old medical school in Salerno stopped existing.

How the Modern University Began

The modern University of Salerno started much later. In 1944, a college was founded to train teachers. It was named "Giovanni Cuomo." This new college remembered the great history of the old medical school.

Then, in 1968, this teacher training college became a state university. It was officially named the University of Salerno. Since then, many more students have joined the university. Today, it is a large and important place for learning in Italy.

What You Can Study Here

The University of Salerno offers many different subjects for students to learn. It is divided into 10 main areas of study, called faculties.

  • Faculty of Pharmacy (for learning about medicines)

The University Library

The university has a very large library called "biblioteca Eduardo R. Caianiello". It holds over 400,000 books! This makes it one of the biggest book collections in all of Italy. Students can find many resources here for their studies.

Learning About the Mediterranean

In 2015, a new research group started at the University of Salerno. It is called the International Centre for Studies and Research "Mediterranean Knowledge" (ICSR). This group works with 14 other research teams in countries around the Mediterranean Sea.

The ICSR wants to help people learn more about the Mediterranean region. They study important topics about its history, culture, and people. To share what they learn, they publish books, a journal, and other papers. They also hold meetings and conferences.
