The University of Würzburg is a famous university located in the city of Würzburg, Germany. It first opened its doors a very long time ago, in 1402! This university is also part of a special group called the Coimbra Group, which includes many old and important universities in Europe.

What's in a Name?

The official name of the university is Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. Most people just call it the University of Würzburg. Its full name comes from two important historical figures.

The first person is Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn. He was a Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, which means he was both a religious leader and a ruler of the area. He helped restart the university over 400 years ago.

The second person is Prince Elector Maximilian Joseph. He was a powerful prince who made the university a public institution. This happened at the beginning of the 19th century, changing it from a religious school to one for everyone.

Today, the university has about 21,000 students. More than 1,000 of these students come from other countries. Many famous people have studied or taught here, including 13 Nobel Prize winners!

Where is the University?

The main offices for the university are in the old part of Würzburg city. This is where the foreign student office and several research centers are located.

There is also a newer campus for arts and humanities. This campus has a modern library and sits on a hill overlooking the city from the east.
