Until I Find You is a novel written by John Irving, published in 2005. It was his 11th book. The story is about a young boy's journey and how his memories change as he grows up.
When John Irving first wrote the book, it was told from the main character's point of view. But he realized it was too much like his own life. So, he rewrote the entire book from a different perspective before it was published.
About the Story
This book explores new ideas, like how our memories can sometimes be tricky. It especially looks at how a child's memories might not always be exactly right. The story takes place in many different countries, including Canada, parts of Europe, and the United States.
Jack's Early Life
The first part of the story follows a young Canadian actor named Jack Burns. As a child, he travels with his mother. They are looking for his father among a group of people who are tattoo artists.
Like characters in other books by John Irving, Jack becomes good at wrestling. He also finds a group of people who become like a family to him. They help him and sometimes cause problems as he grows up. This part of the story shows Jack learning about life and becoming a young man.
Discovering the Truth
The second part of the book shows Jack as an adult. He starts to find out the real truth behind things he thought he understood when he was younger. He learns that some of his childhood memories or ideas were not quite accurate.
Hidden References
Authors sometimes put "allusions" or hidden references in their books. These are like small nods to real-life events or other stories.
In Until I Find You, the main character, Jack, wins an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999. This is a real award given for writing a movie script based on another work. In real life, John Irving himself won this award in 1999. He won it for turning his own book, The Cider House Rules, into a movie script.
Also, in the book, Jack loses the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor to Michael Caine. Michael Caine really did win that award in 1999 for his role in The Cider House Rules movie.
