The Upper Aulaqi Sheikhdom (which means "Upper Aulaqi Chiefdom" in Arabic) was a small state. It was once part of the British Empire's Aden Protectorate. Later, it joined the Federation of Arab Emirates of the South and then the Federation of South Arabia.

The capital city of this state was Sa'id. Today, the land where the Upper Aulaqi Sheikhdom used to be is in the central part of the Shabwah Governorate in the country of Yemen.

A Look at the Past: History of the Sheikhdom

The Upper Aulaqi Sheikhdom became its own independent state in the 18th century. Before this, the Lower Aulaqi sultans had already separated from the Upper Aulaqi rulers. The sheikhs (leaders) in Sa'id slowly gained their freedom from the Upper Aulaqi Sultanate of Nisab.

Important Leaders and Events

Shaikh Farid bin Nasir was a leader who passed away on June 2, 1883. His oldest son, Ruweis, then became the new leader.

In 1890, Ruweis was removed from power by his own people. His brother, Um Rasas bin Farid, took over as leader. Um Rasas passed away in July 1902. After him, his brother, Muhsin bin Farid, became the new Shaikh.

In 1889, the Upper Aulaqi Shaikh signed an agreement. This agreement meant they gave up some old rights they had over other groups called the Fadhli and Abdali.

A special agreement was made with the Upper Aulaqi Shaikh on December 8, 1903, in Aden. This agreement was officially approved on February 5, 1904.

In October 1918, Shaikh Yeslam Barweis, who was the son of a past Upper Aulaqi Shaikh, joined the 1st Yemen Infantry. He served as a Yuzbashi (a type of officer) until March 1925. In April 1928, he became a Senior Arab Officer in the Aden Protectorate Levies. He held this important role until he passed away in September 1929.

In 1931, it was estimated that about 30,000 people lived in the area controlled by this tribe.

Joining the Federations

The Upper Aulaqi Sheikhdom was one of the first members of the Federation of Arab Emirates of the South. This happened in 1959. Later, in 1963, it joined the new group called the Federation of South Arabia.

The End of the Sheikhdom

The last leader of the Upper Aulaqi Sheikhdom was Amir Abd Allah ibn Muhsin al Yaslami Al Aulaqi. He was removed from power on August 28, 1967. His state officially ended in November 1967. This happened when the People's Republic of South Yemen was created.

Who Were the Rulers?

The leaders of the Upper Aulaqi Sheikhdom were called Shaykh al-Mashyakha al-`Awlaqiyya al-`Ulya. This title means "Chief of the Upper Aulaqi Chiefdom."
