Upper Dir is one of the 26 districts in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It is located in the north-western part of the province. This district covers an area of about 3,699 square kilometers. The main town and headquarters of Upper Dir is called Dir.

Before 1996, Upper Dir was part of a single district known simply as Dir. In 1996, this larger district was divided into two separate areas: Upper Dir and Lower Dir District.

A Look at History

When Pakistan became an independent country in 1947, Dir was a special area called a princely state. It was ruled by a leader named Nawab Shah Jehan Khan. In 1969, Dir officially joined Pakistan. The very next year, in 1970, it was made into a district. Later, in 1996, this district was split into Upper Dir and Lower Dir.

How Upper Dir is Governed

The people of Upper Dir elect representatives to help govern their area. These representatives work in different assemblies.
