Urbana is a very small community in Neosho County, Kansas. It is located in the United States. Urbana is called a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area that the government counts for population, even though it doesn't have its own city government. In 2020, only 30 people lived in Urbana.
History of Urbana
Urbana was first planned out in 1870. This process is called "platting." It means someone drew a map showing where streets and buildings would go. The community was built along the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Railroads were very important for travel and moving goods back then.
A post office opened in Urbana in 1870. People could send and receive their mail there. The post office served the community for many years. However, it closed down in 1957.
The Esperanza Community
From 1877 to 1878, Urbana was home to a special group called the "Esperanza Community." This group was made up of people who wanted to live and work together. They shared their resources and tried to create a community where everyone helped each other. They even bought a hotel in Urbana. The community also started its own newspaper, which they called The Star of Hope. This unique community only lasted for a short time.
