Urique (pronounced "Oo-REE-keh") is a small town in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. Its name comes from the Tarahumara language. Urique is the main town in the Urique municipality.
In 2010, about 1,102 people lived there. This was a bit more than the 984 people counted in 2005. The town is located in the southwest part of Chihuahua. It sits at the bottom of a deep valley called Barranca de Urique. This valley was carved by the Urique River. Because Urique is quite low (about 550 meters or 1,800 feet above sea level), it has a climate that is almost tropical.
Geography
Urique is nestled in a region known for its huge cliffs. The town's location at the bottom of the Barranca de Urique valley makes it unique. The Urique River flows through this valley, shaping the landscape.
Climate
Urique has a warm climate, almost tropical, due to its low elevation. Summers can be very hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Winters are milder. The area gets a good amount of rain, especially during the summer months.
