Usora (river) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Usora River is an important river in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It flows into the bigger Bosnia River. The Usora is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and its history.

Journey of the Usora River

The Usora River starts high up in the mountains. Its source is below the peak of Očauš Mountain. From there, it flows for about 82 kilometers before joining the Bosnia River near the town of Doboj.

The town of Teslić is located along the Usora River. People in Teslić sometimes call this part of the river "Velika Usora," which means "Great Usora." This is because a smaller river, called "Mala Usora" (Little Usora), joins it near Teslić at a place called Sastavci.

The water for the Usora River and its smaller streams comes from the large mountain areas of Uzlomac, Borja, and Očauš. In its upper parts, the river makes a wide curve around Borja Mountain, flowing from its southwest to northeast sides.

How the Usora River Forms

The "Great Usora" is formed when two smaller streams, Gomjenice and Brkića, come together. The "Little Usora" starts south of the main road M-4, about 10 kilometers west of Pribinić.

Before the Sastavci area, several rivers and streams flow into the Usora. On its right side, it gets water from Mišića rijeka, Great Ostružnja, Inova, Miljkovača, Velika rijeka (Great river), and Brezna. On its left side, it is joined by Rankovića rijeka and Gračanica.

Flooding and Challenges

For much of its path, the Usora River can flood. These floods are happening more often and cause a lot of damage to the areas nearby.

In the past, during early Bosnian history, the Usora River was known as a "gold-bearing" river. This means people found gold in its waters. It's believed that there might still be gold in its upper parts and in its many smaller streams.

Today, the river's power for making energy is not used. Also, there are very few fish in the river. This is mainly because for many years, untreated wastewater from a wood distillation factory in Teslić has been flowing into it. This pollution has harmed the river's environment.
