The Utah Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is a special place in Ogden, Utah. It collects and shares stories and items from the American West. You can find it inside the historic Ogden Union Station. This station is also home to other cool museums like the Utah State Railroad Museum and the John M. Browning Firearms Museum. The Cowboy Museum also has the Utah Cowboy Hall of Fame, which honors people who have made a big difference in the Western way of life.

About the Museum

The Utah Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum opened in 2012. It received help from the state of Utah to get started. The museum's main goal is to honor cowboys and cowgirls. It also celebrates all the men and women whose lives show the spirit of the West. This includes people who settled Utah and those who continue to live the Western way.

Who the Museum Honors

The museum honors many different kinds of people, such as:

  • Artists
  • Rodeo champions
  • Performers and entertainers
  • Musicians
  • Ranchers
  • Writers
  • Anyone who has helped promote the Western lifestyle, both past and present.

How the Museum Started

The museum was created by the Ogden Pioneer Days Foundation. Susan Van Hooser was asked to lead the effort to open it. She and her team worked very quickly, getting the museum ready in about six weeks! It first opened for just one month in July 2012. The next year, with help from a supporter and the Foundation, the museum found a permanent spot inside the Union Station building.

What You'll Find at the Museum

The museum collects items from the West that tell a story about how the Western way of life developed. This includes special items used by American cowboys.

Even though there isn't a library space yet, the museum has many books. These books cover Western history, arts, and crafts. They also have old catalogs showing different styles of spurs, saddles, and hats. You can also find books about the history and culture of Native Americans. The museum also has photos and stories, both spoken and written, about Utah's Western culture and its people. The museum hopes to make these items available for research in the future.

The Utah Cowboy Hall of Fame

Each year, people can suggest new members for the Utah Cowboy Hall of Fame. A special group of people, who are not part of the museum, reviews these suggestions. They vote privately, sometimes taking up to three votes, to choose the winners. The new members are officially welcomed into the Hall of Fame in early July at Union Station. Anyone interested can attend this ceremony for free!
