The Dennis DeBell Uvas Creek Park Preserve is a special natural area in Gilroy. It covers about 125 acres, which is like 125 football fields! This park is managed by the City of Gilroy. A beautiful creek called Uvas Creek flows right through the middle of it. This creek is a very important part of the preserve.
The preserve is bordered by the Uvas Creek Levee on one side. On the other side, you'll find Christmas Hill Park. A paved path, about 2 miles long, runs along the edge of the preserve. This path is great for jogging, hiking, or riding your bike.
You can visit the park every day of the week. From March to October, it's open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. During November to February, it's open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The Park's Story
Planning for this park started a long time ago, in the 1970s. The land where the preserve now sits used to be a place where sand and gravel were dug up.
In the 1980s, a kind family helped the project. The family of Dennis DeBell gave $1 million to the city. Dennis DeBell was a former city councilman and a developer. His family's gift helped the park project move forward.
In 1995, a lot of work was done to help the Uvas Creek. People worked hard to make the creek inside the preserve look more natural again.
Finally, in 2003, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors made a special decision. They honored Dennis DeBell by renaming the park. It became the Dennis DeBell Uvas Creek Park Preserve.
