Väinö Kivisalo's Early Life
Väinö Kivisalo was born on October 18, 1882, in Karkku, a place in the south-east of what was then the Grand Duchy of Finland. His father was a farmer. When Väinö was 14 years old, his father passed away. After this, his family had to leave their home and farm because the owner made them.
Kivisalo worked as a farmworker in Karkku. He also worked as a laborer in several other places, including Suoniemi, Akaa, Urjala, Hattula, and Vanaja. He was also a factory worker in Tampere. In 1904, he moved to Hämeenlinna, where he worked in a sawmill (a place where wood is cut) for several years.
Väinö Kivisalo's Political Journey
Kivisalo joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Urjala in 1903. He was also very active in groups that worked for better conditions for workers and in movements that promoted avoiding alcohol. From 1914 to 1918, he was the secretary for the SDP's branch in Häme Province South.
Role in the Finnish Civil War
During a time of big changes in Finland, known as the Finnish Revolution, Kivisalo was chosen to be the leader, or Governor, of Häme Province for the government that took power during these changes. After the Finnish Civil War, many people, including Kivisalo, were held in camps because of their political views by the winning side. In August 1918, Kivisalo was given a prison sentence for his role in the conflict. He was released from prison on December 28, 1921.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
After his release, Kivisalo continued his political work. He was the secretary for the SDP's branch in Häme Province North from 1923 to 1925. Then, from 1925 to 1929, he was the secretary for the Häme Province South branch again.
In 1929, he was elected to the Parliament of Finland in the parliamentary election. He was re-elected many times after that, in the elections of 1930, 1933, 1936, 1939, and 1945. This means he served in Parliament for a long time.
Other Political Activities
Kivisalo also played a role in choosing the president of Finland. He was a presidential elector in the elections of 1931, 1937, 1940, and 1943. In 1928, he represented Finland at an international meeting for workers' and socialist groups in Brussels. He was also a member of the local city council in Hämeenlinna for many years. He led the Christian Social Democratic Union and was on the board of the Helsinki Workers' Savings Bank.
Väinö Kivisalo passed away on March 29, 1953, in Helsinki.
