Víctor Gómez Bergés (born February 25, 1940 – died February 24, 2023) was an important person from the Dominican Republic. He was a politician, a lawyer (jurist), and a diplomat. This means he worked for his country in different ways, both at home and with other countries.

Early Life and Education

Víctor Gómez Bergés was born in Santiago de los Caballeros. He studied law at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) and finished when he was 22. He also earned a special doctorate in Canon Law from a university in Rome, Italy.

In 1962, he started working for the government. He helped with getting back money or property that belonged to the state. The next year, in 1963, he began working in the government department for agriculture.

Important Roles in Government

Víctor Gómez Bergés held many important jobs in the Dominican Republic. In 1970, he became the Minister of Education, Fine Arts, and Culture. This meant he was in charge of schools, art, and the country's culture.

From 1972 to 1977, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This is a very important job where he represented his country to other nations. He was the youngest person ever to hold this position in the Dominican Republic's history. After that, he also worked as the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Industry and Commerce between 1977 and 1978.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1978, he became a senator, which is a member of the country's parliament. He led the main group of senators until 1982. Later, in 1983, he became the Dominican Republic's Ambassador to the Vatican, which is the home of the Pope. He was also the Ambassador to Greece and Cyprus at the same time.

Víctor Gómez Bergés was a very active person. He wrote many essays about politics. He also taught as a professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. From 2000 to 2004, he was a member of the Central American Parliament. Later, from 2011 to 2018, he served as a Judge on the Constitutional Court. This court makes sure that laws follow the country's constitution.

He passed away on February 24, 2023, just one day before his 83rd birthday. His son, Víctor Gómez Casanova, is also a politician.
