Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The VIII Brigade (also known as the 8th Brigade) was a special group of airplanes during World War I. It was part of the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force. Their main job was to fly bomber planes and carry out air raids against Germany.

What Was the VIII Brigade?

The VIII Brigade was an important group of airplanes that flew during World War I. It was formed to help the British forces by flying bomber planes. These planes would carry out air raids, which means they would fly over enemy areas and drop bombs.

How the Brigade Started

The VIII Brigade was officially created on December 28, 1917. Before it became a brigade, it was known as the 41st Wing. The 41st Wing was made bigger and given a new, higher status to become the VIII Brigade. Even after the change, the 41st Wing continued to be a part of the VIII Brigade.

Who Led the VIII Brigade?

The only person who ever led the VIII Brigade was a military leader named Brigadier-General C. L. N. Newall. He was in charge of all the planes and pilots in the brigade.

When Did the Brigade Start Its Work?

Even though the VIII Brigade was created in December 1917, it didn't start its official duties until February 1, 1918. This was when Brigadier-General Newall took command.

Joining the Royal Air Force

Just a couple of months later, on April 1, 1918, the VIII Brigade became part of the new Royal Air Force. This new air force was created by combining the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.

Becoming Part of a Bigger Force

The British government wanted to do more bombing raids against Germany. Because of this, the VIII Brigade became part of an even larger group called the Independent Air Force. This happened on June 6, 1918.
