About Vaidehi's Life
Her Early Years
Vaidehi was born on February 12, 1945. Her parents were A. V. N. Hebbar and Mahalakshmi. She grew up in Kundapura taluk, which is in the Udupi district of Karnataka, India. She lived in a big, traditional family.
Vaidehi studied Commerce at Bhandarkar College in Kundapura. Her father was a lawyer, and her mother managed their home. At home, they spoke a special type of Kannada called Kundapur Kannada. Vaidehi often uses this dialect in her books.
She got her pen name, 'Vaidehi', in an interesting way. Early in her writing, she sent a story to a Kannada magazine called Sudha. She later asked them not to publish it because it was a true story about real people. But the editor published it anyway, changing her name to 'Vaidehi'. This name became very popular, and she kept using it for all her future writings.
Her Family Life
Vaidehi married K. L. Srinivasa Murthy when she was 23 years old. They have two daughters, Nayana Kashyap and Pallavi Rao. After getting married, Vaidehi moved to Shivamogga. Later, her family moved to Udupi and then to Manipal, where they live now.
Vaidehi's daughter, Nayana Kashyap, is also a writer. She translates books from Kannada to English and teaches English. Nayana has translated some of Vaidehi's books, including five novels.
