Vakula Mahadevi facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Vakula Mahadevi was a powerful queen who ruled the ancient Indian Kingdom of Toshala. She was part of the Bhauma-Kara dynasty and ruled for a short time, from about 936 to 940 CE.

Who Was Vakula Mahadevi?

Vakula Mahadevi was a "queen regnant," which means she ruled the kingdom all by herself. She was not just a queen because she was married to a king; she held the power and made the decisions. Her kingdom, Toshala, was located in what is now the state of Odisha in India. She ruled during the 10th century, a long time ago!

Her Early Life and Family

Vakula Mahadevi was born a princess into another important family, the Bhanj dynasty. When she grew up, she married King Subhakaradeva V of the Bhauma-Kara dynasty.

Before Vakula Mahadevi became queen, her husband, King Subhakaradeva V, ruled the kingdom. After he passed away, his other wife, Gauri Mahadevi, became queen. Then, their daughter, Dandi Mahadevi, took the throne.

Becoming Queen

In the year 936 CE, Queen Dandi Mahadevi, who was Vakula Mahadevi's stepdaughter, passed away. After this, Vakula Mahadevi became the new queen of Toshala.

Not much information has survived about her time as queen. We know that she made a special gift: she donated a village in an area called Uttara Tosali. Her rule also showed that the Bhanj dynasty, her birth family, started to have more influence in the kingdom's affairs.

End of Her Rule

After Vakula Mahadevi's reign, another queen named Dharma Mahadevi took over the throne of Toshala.
