Valentine J. Joyce (born February 14, 1931 – died October 8, 2022) was a famous Irish radio presenter. He worked for Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), which is Ireland's national broadcaster.
Early Life and Education
Val Joyce was born on February 14, 1931. He went to St Mary's College in Rathmines, a part of Dublin. After that, he studied at University College Dublin and earned a degree in commerce. His very first job was working as a clerk for a shipping company.
A Career in Radio
Before starting his radio career, Val Joyce worked as an accountant for the Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake. This was a type of lottery that raised money for hospitals. In the 1950s, Val's radio journey began when he was chosen to present a show sponsored by the Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake on Radio Éireann.
When television started in Ireland with Telefís Éireann, Val also voiced many TV commercials. He presented a show called Sound of the Light, which featured the Radio Éireann Light Orchestra.
One of his most exciting achievements was starting Pop Call in the 1960s. This was the first ever radio show in Ireland where listeners could call in and request pop songs!
Popular Shows
Val Joyce was especially well-known for his show Airs and Races. This program ran for many years, from 1974 to 1991, on Saturday afternoons. It played popular songs and also covered live sporting events, especially horse racing.
He also presented Ireland's Choice with Val Joyce. Later, he hosted Late Date for over 15 years. This popular night-time show continued until 2006 when it finished.
Family Life and Passing
Val Joyce met his wife, Vera Morgan, in 1961. She was a dancer and singer. They met at a party after the very first night of Telefís Éireann (Irish television). They got engaged after going to the second ever recording of The Late Late Show in July 1962 and soon got married. Val and Vera had five children together. Vera Joyce passed away in October 2016, a few years before Val.
